What you should know about your dental care.
In the following we would like to explain some terms from the field of dental care in more detail. These terms play an important role in dental treatment and are intended to help you assess your dental insurance.
What are dental prophylactic measures? Prophylaxis as dental care at the dentist consists of preventive measures that are intended to prevent the development of diseases of the teeth and periodontium. These include: professional tooth cleaning, oral hygiene information, regular checks by the dentist, caries risk diagnostics, periodontitis risk diagnostics.
What is a professional dental cleaning (PZR)? The dental cleaning, which goes beyond the domestic method, is carried out by specially trained personnel. The PZR includes a thorough examination of the teeth. All soft and hard plaque and bacteria are removed from the teeth. In addition, the interdental spaces are cleaned, the teeth are polished and fluoridated.
What does standard care mean? The standard care determines the simple form of therapy to be used for all dental findings in persons with statutory health insurance and thus also determines the amount of the fixed subsidy that the SHI pays to the dentist for treatment.
What does private care mean? The dentist usually uses higher quality treatments or materials that go beyond the standard care. The insured person receives the “fixed subsidy” from his health insurance company and bears the additional costs of private care himself.
What is an implant? It is an artificial tooth root for the attachment of crowns, bridges; this supporting pillar is screwed into the bone instead of a lost tooth and then grows firmly.
What is a superstructure? A superstructure is a dental prosthesis attached to a dental implant. It can be a crown, a bridge or a prosthesis.
What are inlays? This is a part of a tooth made by a dental technician. Inlays can also be referred to as inlays or ceramic fillings. The inlay replaces parts of the occlusal surface, but not the cusps. If cusps also have to be restored, onlays are required. The GKV does not pay for inlays/onlays. There are different materials: gold and ceramics.
What is dental treatment? Dental treatment includes dental services for the prevention, early detection and treatment of dental, oral and maxillofacial diseases. These include Tooth fillings, periodontal treatment, root canal treatment, crunch splint / occlusal splint.
Which dental treatments are not covered by the GKV? Plastic fillings are not covered by the GKV. The costs for an amalgam filling are reimbursed by the GKV. In the case of periodontal or root canal treatment, there are also cases in which the SHI does not pay and the dentist draws up a private invoice.
What is a root canal treatment? Root canal treatments have the aim of preserving an affected tooth. Root canal treatment is necessary in case of root inflammation, after an accident or in preparation for crown treatment. The root canal is cleaned and widened, then filled and sealed. In this way, the tooth root is restored.
What are function-analytical and function-therapeutic treatments and measures? Function-analytical and function-therapeutic measures have the purpose of diagnosing and correcting disorders of the function of the temporomandibular joints, the masticatory muscles and the teeth. They are mainly dental prostheses, but can also be regarded as dental treatment. The GKV does not pay for this.
